NIO E-SUV with 6 seats: Nio EL8 now available from us for tests and CarClinics

After Nio presented its first vehicle in Germany in mid-2022 with the ET7 saloon, the Chinese manufacturer is now launching its latest top-of-the-range model with the EL8. The technical basis of both Nios is pretty much identical - in terms of length, electric drive, batteries, swap technology for quick battery replacement and luxurious equipment, you will find much of the same features from the ET7 in the EL8. The main difference is the vehicle concept, which, as an electric SUV, gives the EL8 a much more imposing appearance and considerably more interior space.

Nio takes on the premium competition with the EL8

While well-known manufacturers in Europe such as Mercedes, BMW and Volvo shine with brand values that have been fought for over decades, Nio, as a newcomer, has yet to find its market position. With the EL8 electric SUV, they are focusing on size with a surprising drag coefficient (0.25), neatly finished luxury and an almost overwhelming variety of electronic features: Chassis with intelligent air suspension and 2-chamber dampers, air conditioning with five electronically controlled climate zones, comfortable seats with hot-stone massage and sleeping position, refrigerator, 7.1.4 surround sound with 2,300 watts of power and “high-end sensor technology” with 33 sensors and seven high-resolution 8MP cameras.

The Nio EL8 SUV in executive version in a nutshell:

  • Length 5.10 m, width 1.99m (without mirrors), height 1.75 m
  • Top speed: 200 km/h (limited)
  • System output 480 kW / 653 hp and 850 Nm torque
  • Continuous system output: 105 kW / 142 hp
  • All-wheel drive
  • Electric range according to WLTP: up to 510 km
  • Battery: 100 kWh net (long range)
  • Charging capacity up to 240 kW DC and 11 kW AC
  • Battery swap system with approx. 6 min. swap time
  • Towing capacity: up to 2,000 kg

Excitement for your tests - many unanswered questions about the EL8

In addition to the high-tech and luxury features mentioned above, the Nio EL8 SUV also shines in terms of design. Nio speaks of a clear design with clean surfaces and a silhouette characterized by light and shadow. On the other hand, there are a number of unconvincing detailed solutions: with less than 22% continuous system power, “indirect steering” (auto motor und sport 18/2024), sometimes confusing menu variety, which also changes after updates, charging power at wallboxes max. 11 kW. It will be exciting to compare the equipment and features of the Nio EL8 with premium competitors such as Tesla's Model X, Mercedes EQS SUV, BMW iX, Volvo EX90 or Kia EV9.
